Teachers study digital technology in new NPC summer online course

WHITE MOUNTAINS - Teachers can gain a better understanding of new technology literacy and improve communication with "digital natives" by enrolling in a new online "Introduction to Educational Technology" course this summer through Northland Pioneer College.
No textbook is required for the "learning-by-doing" instruction covering a large variety of online learning environments and applications. This course will "expose teachers to several different online learning management systems and free Google tools to enhance student success," commented instructor Wei Ma. "You'll create and publish your own online digital portfolio, demonstrating your growth in the understanding and mastery of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) and Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) principles as a competency benchmark," Ma continued.
Other course outcomes will include application of theories and practices to enhance e-learning and distance education; development of critical instructional design skills to facilitate and evaluate technology integration into curriculum; review of trends in K-12 computing and digital media, such as social networks, Wiki and blogs; and a better understanding of the concepts and implications on how to communicate and interact with "digital natives" - current K-12 students.
Sign up for the "Introduction to Technology" (CIS-199-80899) course before May 23 to avoid an addition $25 late registration fee.
Register at any NPC location during regular business hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fridays, (after May 16 - Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., closed Fridays) or by phone, (800) 266-7845 ext. 7459.
Dr. Ma has been providing technical and teaching support and training for K-12 educators for five years. His expertise is in general educational computing, classroom technology integration and distance learning. He has a master's degree in telecommunications and a doctorate in educational studies, with an emphasis in Educational Technology, from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He is NPC's full time faculty dedicated to Educational Technology, working with other instructors to develop better online curriculum and resources for students.
